St. Peter's Basilica in the Piazza San Pietro

This is the iconic sight where the Pope addresses the Roman nation with prayer and announcements.

St. Peters Basilica in the Piazza San Pietro at the Vatican City.
The basilica is the burial sight of Saint Peter and the tomb is directly below the high altar of the basilica. Very nice to visit at night, as it is much quieter. The whole square is lit up at night, right in the centre of the Vatican City.

Beautiful colonnades that invite you into the Vatican square and symbolise the out stretched arms of the church embracing the world. It consists of 284 Doric columns.

The 140 statues on top are not identical and depict the peaceful and majestic ambiance in the square.
These are all statues of saints on top of the semi-circular, two sided colonnades.

A post card view at night, when the lights shine into the square.

On each side, there is a fountain, that is lit up at night and shows how beautiful they really are. We went there over the Christmas holidays, and it seemed to be more symbolic to us, even though we are not Catholic.

The queues are extremely long at a waiting time of ±5 hours can be expected to enter St. Peters Basilica.
