Basilica di San Giovanni

Welcome to Basilica di San Giovanni

One of the first churches established in Rome. It is said to be ranked as the best church in Rome, even nicer than St. Peter's Basilica in The Vatican City. It is the official seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope.

Inside the Basilica, the church is separated into different smaller cathedrals. It was built in the 4th century by Constantine.  The San Giovanni metro station is about 5 minute walk.

The main altar is used during our visit on a Sunday morning sermon. The altar has a cedar table and is said to be the one used by Christ at the last supper. If this is just a rumour, we're not sure.

It's very beautiful, and adorned in golden designs all over. The main altar is only used by the Bishop. It is said to have relics of St. Peter and St. Paul.

The main hall is flanked on each side by the statues of the twelve disciples.

The presence of the Holy Spirit is felt throughout the church, as you look at it's amazing architecture. The design on the ceiling are made with golden adornments.
Even for the slightly non believer this is a great experience to behold.

The front bronze door was relocated from the Curia temple in the Romun Forum.
In front of the Basilica, are amazing and breath-taking designs to the ceiling and floor, as it invites you in towards the huge doors.

This is one of the cathedrals within the Basilica, depicting the nativity scene of Christs' birth place.

This is taken a little further away, to show the beautiful cathedral altar.

On either side of the main hall, are confessionals, that cater for more than one European language, like German, French, Italian, and English.

This is one of the statues, depicting one of the twelve apostles. To stand close to one of these, gives you a sense of purpose. The feeling is indescribable. I'm a Christian believer, but not a Catholic, but yet I'm still in awe of this magnificent building.

Another small cathedral inside the Basilica, with a beautiful arch, shining a glorious beam of sunlight into the cathedral. There are a few small cathedrals inside the main Basilica.

The Basilica was dedicated to St. John the Baptist and Evangelist.
This was a great experience at the Basilica di San Giovanni, it will never be forgotten.  Words cannot describe how magical this place felt.
