Afrikaans Taal Monument

The Afrikaans Taal Monument, stands proudly on top of a hill in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa.

The most famous Afrikaans icon stands on top of Paarl rock.  It was erected in 1975 and commemorates Afrikaans as an official language separating it from Dutch.

The monument stands looking over the farmlands of both Stellenbosch and Paarl.
The Hottentots Holland Mountains, Stellenbosch and Table Mountain can all be seen from this monument.

Here we are standing inside the "obelisk" like formation which has a small water feature that echo the sound up the walls of the monument. It stands approximately 57m tall. The Afrikaans language is a relatively young language.  The monument is designed with three columns that get shorter, that represents the reducing effect of European languages like Dutch and French had on the growing Afrikaans language.

If you like history and this is of interest to you then have a look on top of Paarl rock and be surprised by the views overlooking the Stellenbosch and beyond.
